Mineola, NY is located in Nassau County on Long Island. The village was incorporated in 1899 and the population was about 20,000 as of the 2010 census. Mineola is known for its historic homes and its downtown which includes a variety of businesses, including restaurants, a movie theater, and a train station. Mineola has a strong community spirit and hosts many events throughout the year, including a summer concert series, a farmers’ market, and a holiday parade.
As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 18,799. The racial makeup of the village was 73.4% White, 10.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.1% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, and 5.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.9% of the population. The median income for a household in the village was $85,758, and the median income for a family was $102,218. Males had a median income of $78,205 versus $47,599 for females. The per capita income for the village was $39,155. About 1.7% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 1.7% of those age 65 or over. Mineola is home to a number of schools and organizations including Mineola High School, Mineola Middle School, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, Winthrop-University Hospital, and St Francis Hospital.
Education in Mineola is overseen by the Mineola Union Free School District. The district operates four schools: two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Mineola High School is ranked among the top 3% of high schools in New York State. Mineola Elementary School’s team won the National Academic League Championship in 2009.
